This is an interview with Samurdhi Karunarathne (Team Captain), Gihan Jayatilaka and Harshana Weligampola, who became the country first in IEEEXtreme 10.0 and became sixty second in global leaderboard. IEEEXtreme is a 24 hour coding competition, organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), with the participation of teams from all around the world.
With the dawn of the year 2017, the University of Peradeniya marked its proud journey of 75 glorious years, since its establishment as the University of Ceylon in 1942, in Colombo.
A grand ceremony was held on 10th January with the presence of many distinguished guests from the administration and the academia, to celebrate this occasion. A one day workshop on Health and Safety at Workplace was organized by the Faculty of Engineering for the Non-academic staff of the Faculty and selected staff members from other administrative units of the university.
The event was held on 28th November 2016 under the patronage of Prof. Leelananda Rajapaksha, Dean Faculty of Engineering. The Deputy Director Eng. Luxman Jansz (Deputy Commissioner of Laborer (Tech.) and Deputy Chief Factory Inspecting Engineer, Labour Department) served as the Resource Persons for the Workshop. More than 200 Non-Academic members, including representatives from the security department, took part in the workshop. Certificates of participation were issued to those who completed both the morning and afternoon sessions.
Mr. David B. Durocher, the president of the IEEE Industry Applications Society and Dr. Peter Magyar, the chair of the Chapters and Membership Development Committee of IAS visited the IAS Chapter of IEEE Student Branch, University of Peradeniya on 12th December 2016. The event was held at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering with the participation of many student members.
Since 1950, our alma mater, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, the first engineering faculty of the country, produces innovative, creative and talented engineers to our motherland. Continuing the journey of excellence, new entrants of E/15 batch were enrolled on 26th November 2016.

An interactive session, focussed on promoting discussions and activities between the staff and the new (E/15) batch of students, was held on 8th December 2016, at the University Gymnasium. Along with the freshmen, more than 50 staff members voluntarily participated in this event.
In the premises of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, with the participation of over 200 delegates from all around the island, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) Sri Lanka Section organized the first ever awards night to recognize the effort of its members who live up to the mission of IEEE of advancing technology for the betterment of humanity. As the inaugural awards night of IEEE Sri Lanka Section, this event was held to recognize three streams, namely: Best Young Professionals Activity, Best Student Branch Activity and Best Women in Engineering (WIE) Activity for the year of 2016.
A new building for the Department of Chemical & Process Engineering was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake, on 5th of January 2017. Prof. Leelananda Rajapaksha, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. C.S. Kalpage, Head of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering and many other academic and non-academic staff members participated in the occasion. The Oldest Computer Engineering Department in the university system of the country, Department of Computer Engineering of University of Peradeniya, with the collaboration of Association of Computer Engineering Students (ACES), organized its annual symposium on 14th of September at Excel World, Colombo.
The first ever Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering Symposium (MIES) was successfully held on 22nd October 2016 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. The event was organized by the Manufacturing Engineering Association and the Department of Production Engineering of the University of Peradeniya.
